Market innovations destroy censorship

The free exchange of ideas is one of the most powerful tools we have to improve our world and society. Humanity's history is rife with examples of the most powerful in society clamping down on free speech in order to consolidate power, but every time censorship rears its head, the market provides an answer.

Information spread truly began with the advent of the printing press, at which point the battle for censorship became a bit of a game of cat and mouse. While governments tried to clamp down on the free reporting and spreading of news and information, they ultimately couldn't keep up with the rapid pace of the market. As newer technologies developed, news reporting and dissemination of information evolved into new formats such as radio and television news. Suppressing information became more and more an exerted effort of oppressive regimes.

In the modern age, we've seen social media break new grounds into media reporting. Everything from emergency response information being communicated on Twitter to the broadcasting of toppling of tyrannical governments through social media communication, new media has evolved faster than censorship can keep up. Entrepreneurs are jumping on this opportunity and using this newfound access to help give voices to those who wouldn't have a chance to express their views before.

Market incentives continually push for individuals to be able to spread information in a decentralized manner, free from the coercion of the powerful. There will always be people who attempt to silence voices, but when people are free to innovate and provide information that people want in new ways, minority views will continue to have a stronger foothold to be expressed.
